  • Great question. A cowbird is a fabulous, North-American blackbird that is really interested in species-survival. Take the Brown-headed Cowbird (which our logo, Lenny, is modeled after). These birds love large open meadows and, as the name suggests, pastures with livestock. They also love birdfeeders. Sure, other birds think Cowbirds are a nuisance, since female Cowbirds lay their eggs in other birds’ nests and then high-tail it outta there. We call that industriousness and find the term “brood parasite” somewhat offensive.

Oh, you meant in this context?! In that case, it’s us—Carey and Christina. Are you ready to fly? If so, get started here.

Branding + Web Design FAQs

  • Your business is what you sell. Your brand is everything else.

At Cowbird, branding isn’t just a logo or a color palette. It’s the entire vibe of your business. Every verbal or visual touchpoint with your client or customer. We’re here to design it all.

A strong brand is built on strategy, not just aesthetics: It’s your messaging, voice, visuals, and the overall experience you create for your audience, both online and in person.

To turn leads into brand superfans, they need to know, like and trust you. But if your branding is inconsistent or poorly executed, you’re creating confusion instead of confidence—and that costs you sales. Every off-brand touchpoint erodes trust, making it harder for people to recognize and connect with your business. Bad branding CAN affect your bottom line. That’s why we oversee every detail to make sure your new brand is cohesive and connects with the right people.

  • It might be time to upgrade if:

    • You’re growing quickly and your services or offerings have fundamentally changed since you launched

    • Your branding doesn’t capture the spirit of what you do or who you are

    • You want to charge a premium for your services and you need to level-up

    • If you’ve outgrown the DIY phase of business

    • If your clients are struggling to find what they need on your website

  • For individuals, our Brand + Web Package typically takes 2–4 weeks to complete. For businesses, the estimated timeline is 4–6 weeks, depending on the scale of your business, the complexity of the web build and the amount of stakeholders involved. We work intensively on a limited number of projects at once, so we can give you our full creative attention and get you to launch as efficiently as possible.

  • We’ve spent years building brands for growing small businesses. As we get to know a business, we inevitably end up unearthing some skeletons in their closets, which makes sense—sometimes business owners are too close to see what’s right in front of them.

Think of us as a stand-in for your audience: we help you clarify user pathways, make sense out of your web copy, think up punchy marketing messaging, strategize with you about creating a long-term, sustainable content marketing plan and help you beef up audience engagement.

If your clients have questions about your website or keep stumbling at the same points in your copy, it may mean there’s a crack in the foundation. We can help you spackle that crack. We can also help you workshop other branding queries that may be frustrating you.

If you’re expanding, we can talk through strategies that make sense for your market. Sometimes it’s useful to talk with people who have experience building brands and marketing in the real world (rather than asking AI).

Our coaching and consulting sessions are 60-90 minutes long and tailored entirely to your business, the questions you have and ideas you’re grappling with.

    Let’s talk through it.

  • So many of our clients have been working nonstop since launching their businesses that they don’t have time to pause and write down the foundational things that define their brand.

Your Brand DNA is made up of your purpose (why you exist, other than to make money), mission (what you do), vision (where you want to go), layered with your brand’s values, voice and personality.

We provide a process and framework for clients struggling to figure out their own Brand DNA, but if you’re looking for a way to get started, try our free downloadable Brand DNA Worksheet.

  • We build websites for our clients exclusively on Squarespace. We have tried working on other platforms, but we find Squarespace to be the most user-friendly CMS on the market. After we build you a website, we’ll show you how to maintain it, so that you don’t have to rely on anyone else to make simple updates on your site. This means your site won’t become out-of-date almost as soon as it’s launched.

We believe a website is a living, breathing thing, so it needs to be checked and tweaked and tested and viewed as often as necessary. Even if you don’t have the time or the patience to build a website, we’ll show you how to keep it up-to-date efficiently and easily. We offer a live training session, video tutorials on updating your site and access to us during a 30-day support window with every Brand + Web Package.

  • While we are not explicitly an SEO agency, we have an understanding of the SEO—and the burgeoning AIO (AI Optimization)—landscape. We create websites that are keyworded for web crawlers, but written for human engagement. We have a long list of SEO goodness that we bake into every Squarespace site we design. And we help our clients strategically position themselves to rank as high as possible for their target search terms. We can help you brainstorm keyword-rich blog post topics, sweep your existing web copy to make improvements or start from the ground-up with a new Squarespace website.

  • Not if you work with us! We are both writers, which means several things: We have MFAs in writing, so we’re used to analyzing copy and determining exactly what tone, mood and meaning a text conveys. Plus, we got our start working in communications at Columbia University, so we have experience crafting marketing messaging.

We live for the language. We’ll talk about a comma for hours. (Don’t worry, we won’t make you sit through it.) Marketing is storytelling. We don’t just write web copy; we help our Brand + Web clients draft and craft a bank of compelling, on-brand marketing language that they can pull from again and again, for captions, emails, pitch decks and more.

Photography + Video FAQs

  • A founder’s video is a glorious shortcut: a way to showcase the emotional heart of your brand—and how your brand serves its audience—without a single line of text. Our founder’s videos are generally about two- to six-minutes long and feature the people behind the business discussing the reasons they started their business, how their services help their audiences and the transformations their clients undergo.

Our videos include b-roll (atmospheric shots of the staff in action or clients interacting with the founders) and potentially clips from client testimonials. We create the full experience for the shoot: we storyboard the narrative, write the interview questions, create the shot list, provide the equipment, shoot and edit the footage and deliver a complete video that highlights who your brand is and who you serve. Our clients post these videos on their websites and use clips across a variety of platforms.

Think of it as a way to connect personally with your audience when you can’t meet them all in person.

  • We always think custom visuals tell the best story behind a brand, but we get it: sometimes the budget doesn’t allow for custom photos and visuals. We understand the limited resources of a small business (after all, we’re a small business too!).

We often create projects for our clients in phases, which means if a client doesn’t have the budget or the appetite for a brand shoot while we’re building a new brand and website for them, we will curate a selection of stock photos to stand in for custom visuals. Then, down the line, if the client wants to customize their visuals, we’re happy to grab our cameras and step in! We have a high client-return rate, and we appreciate that our clients see us as long-term partners.

One thing we will say: We think you need at least some professionally shot imagery on your website and other marketing channels.

  • We could, but we prefer to think bigger! We only offer portrait sessions as an add on to our Brand + Web Package. What a person conveys in their professional portrait can speak volumes about the person behind the brand. That’s why we love getting to the heart of who our clients are with creative portrait sessions and brand shoots.

  • We’re in a trust recession. We’re all being sold to all the time, and everyone knows it. So anything you can do to make your reviews or testimonials as trustworthy as possible, is a big win for your small business. People want to hear from people—nothing is more powerful than hearing a transformational client story, in their own words. That’s why we specialize in cinematic, documentary-style interviews. We love getting to the heart of your business and showcasing the people and processes that make your brand unique.

Social Media + Content Marketing FAQs

  • While we won’t get into your social accounts and post directly to your channels, we will help you with your content marketing strategy (which is often the hardest part!). We’ve developed a patented Content Marketing Cascade—a system for organizing material that moves from the brainstorm phase to publication on the platforms that align best with your business goals.

The Cascade system makes your job easier: you put your time and energy into the top of the waterfall (the longform content like blogs and Youtube videos) and then the material is easily adapted for your other channels including Pinterest, Instagram, Google Business, email marketing and more.

  • We recommend some form of content marketing for small businesses, but that doesn’t mean it has to run (or ruin) your life! Many of our clients come to us exhausted by the energy and time involved in feeding the social media machine. If this is how you’re feeling, why not stop and evaluate the return on your time and energy? Maybe you’re posting on social media platforms because you feel like you have to, but it’s not necessarily leading to business growth. Maybe you’re using it to try to capture audiences that may view your posts but will never take advantage of your services. We give you permission to slow your roll. The short answer is, content marketing can be a great tactic to grow your small business, but only if it’s done strategically.
